Chapter Two

Chapter Two

July 23, 2009

Sometime this fucking year Cupid. It sounds like there are a hundred of them out there. Probably with his boyfriend again. Bastard,

Last time he had a spat with his lover I nearly died. Turns out that when he gets all melancholy and down on himself he just stops whatever he has going on at that particular time. At the last particular time he lost it, we were sitting ready in an ambush. We had some intel that told us where and when two of the largest cells on the east coast were meeting to plan a large operation. A large operation, that is, against us.

Let me give you a history lesson. The scientists had it right when they told the world about the Big Bang theory. After we evolved from the primordial ooze from whence we came we had to explain it, had to explain ourselves. Human kind began to tell stories of how the world and mankind came to be. These stories and ideas took on a life of their own and the power of these beliefs grew and took on a life of their own,

It began when our ancestors started seeing their beliefs in the form of the world around them, which is why even today we still see that certain animals, plants, gems, metals, etc.  are associated with certain deities. These archetypical beings grew stronger and stronger as the people who believed in them did. Civilizations grew and fell, the gods always at their heels, riding their coat tails. When the ancient Hebrews came around everything changed. One god changed the fate of the entire world. Yahweh figured out that a living body sacrificed for the whole duration of a human life is far more powerful than the body that is killed in the name of a god.

Yahweh began a campaign against every other god and goddess in the world. In the past, such as when the Romans conquered the Greeks, they absorbed their pantheon of deities, as they did the Irish, Brits, Egyptians, and pretty much everyone else. There would be a tussle for authority between the gods, but hey all is fair in love and war right? They finally met their match when they conquered the Middle East. Yahweh commanded his followers to die for him if needed, he made the ultimate sacrifice when he had his own son killed to turn the tides of power. Yes the Christians suffered in the beginning, persecuted like dogs, but woe to the rest of the world when they rose to power. The Catholic Church rose to power in the time of emperors, grew stronger still when it split. The British Empire was ruled by the crown, but controlled by the Pope.

Each country that was taken over was one big act of murder. When the religion of the native people is slowly stamped out, the deities who depend on those people become weaker and weaker. Some hang on as just an archetype, no longer recognizable any more than an idea. Too weak to stand against this ethereal invasion they fade away. Hostile take over, conquest with death to the loser, murder.

The fallen retreated to the outskirts of civilization. Ever heard of the word pagan? It is derived from the latin word for country-dweller, and was made a word of disgust by the Church. The country folks knew that when their crops came in they should thank a particular deity. When a loved one passed they prayed to their god/dess of death that they may be taken care of in the next life. It is here that the fallen survived their demise.
Yahweh is the epiphany of jealousy because he wanted it all to himself. He wanted the harvest and the planting, the births and slaughters. Everything. When he was weak he told his followers that a evil had come upon them that must be purged. The Salem Witch Trials ring a bell? When a god threatened to topple him in an area, he went to war.

When the world came to peace, Yahweh fell to pieces. Threatened, he urged his followers to martyrdom. Some listened and some saw the folly in it. The sane Christians, with this new knowledge revealed to them, became more accepting. Keeping the best parts of their faith, and there are good parts to it, they denounced the Church as it simultaneously cast them out.

With the tables turned, the surviving old gods and goddesses returned. True faith returned in that we were truly given freewill, the choice of believing in which ever deity resonated inside of us, or more than one, or none. By the way, after this all became everyday knowledge it did absolutely no good to be an Atheist. Funny, of all the religions they were the only group who were proven completely wrong. As the gods grew stronger everyday, Yahweh knew that his days were numbered. Making alliances with some of the weaker gods, those that would never regain their full power with all the competition, Yahweh did the only thing he could do. He declared war against the world.

Now that our history lesson is finished we can move on. Please though, keep in mind that this was all related to me by Athena, who we all know is far smarter than I am. I am certain that there is a little bit of a bias to the whole thing, but, Athena is not trying to kill me for not worshipping her. Great lady with some great legs, but she isn’t my cup of tea. If you would like to ask her yourself to explain all of it then go ahead, she loves telling the story.
